The Horizon Image Data Browser
Overview
The package is made up of Java classes and interfaces, as well as
ready-to-use applets and applications. The design is meant to (in
principle) support any image format originating either from the Web or
local disk. Here are some of the features we are working on:

History and Design
The Horizon Java Package is a result of a collaboration of research
groups at
NCSA known as Project
Horizon, a cooperative agreement between
NASA and the
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The aim of Project
Horizon is to develop digital library technology for access to
earth and space science data over the network.
Working on several fronts, Project Horizon has developed several
separate Java-based tools for browsing image data. These tools
include:
These early results uncovered a variety of common features and
techniques that might be applied to the browsing of any type of
scientific data, regardless of format or origin. The Horizon Package
attempts to bring these image browsing solutions together along with
new ones into a single general-purpose collection.
The general design of the Horizon package is outlined in a
design white paper which describes
the purpose and planned features along with an overview of how they
might be implemented.
